History of CMA
In 1972, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) began the Certified Management Accountant program to provide professional recognition for the management accountant that would be a comparable designation of the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for the public accountant. The first examination was given in December of that year. Sixty-one candidates passed all five parts, and certificates were awarded to the 54 candidates who met the experience requirement. Since then, the program has grown steadily. As of January 1996, 16,989 people have completed the exam.
Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) , who endorses the Certified Management Accountants (CMA)® Program, is the largest management accounting association in the world with approximately 82,000 members and more than 300 chapters. Founded in 1919 as an educational organization, the IMA helped expand the knowledge and professionalism of people specifically interested in cost accounting.
Today the IMA is the leading voice of corporate accountants and financial executives & prepares accountants for a career other than public accounting.
CMA and CFMs are highly paid and respected members of the accounting community. They play an important role in advising upper level management. No matter what field you choose to work, opportunities abound.
The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation provides corporate management and individual Members with an objective measure of knowledge and competence in the field of management accounting. The CMA is an invaluable credential for professional advancement and for broadening professional skills and perspective.
Only the CMA certification requires the broad range of topics that are key to management performance and contribution. Exam topics include economics, business finance, situational analysis, and decision making with a strong emphasis on ethics. Combined with relevant rule-based subject matter, the four-tiered CMA exam is designed to develop and measure critical thinking and decision-making skills.
CMA Course Objectives:
- Establish management accounting as a recognized profession by identifying the role of the management accountant and financial manager, the underlying body of knowledge, and course of study by which such know-ledge is acquired.
- Encourage higher educational standards in the management accounting field.
- Establish an objective measure of an individual's knowledge and competence in the field of management accounting.
- Encourage continued professional develop-ment by management accountants.
While the CMA certification isn’t required for IMA Members, professional certification is the most effective way for our Members to concretely demonstrate and maintain the highest standard of relevant knowledge and skills.
